What Is a Razor-Cut Hoodie? How They're Made and How to Care for One

If you have been to a music festival or a faire, you have probably seen one: a cotton hoodie whose outer layer is sliced into stripes, with bright colors peeking through the cuts. That is a razor-cut hoodie, and it is one of the most recognizable pieces of hippie clothing from Nepal.

How razor-cut works

The hoodie is made from layers of cotton rib knit. After the layers are stitched together, the top layer is cut by hand in rows, and the edges curl back to reveal the color beneath. Because the cutting is done by hand, no two hoodies are exactly alike.

Patchwork, tie-dye and fleece-lined styles

Many razor-cut hoodies add patchwork panels, hand-painted details or embroidery. Fleece-lined versions are the warmest choice for cold nights at camp, while unlined rib knit is better for layering. See the full range in our hippie hoodies.

How to care for a razor-cut hoodie

  • Wash in cold water, inside out, on a gentle cycle or by hand.
  • Hang or lay flat to dry; skip the dryer to keep the cut edges neat.
  • Wash dark and bright colors separately the first few times.

What to wear it with

A razor-cut hoodie works over a simple tank with a long boho maxi skirt, or with jeans on an ordinary day.
